Nothing Much to Add

This was a very full weekend, preceded by a very stressful week. Therefore, I did not get much reading done. Nothing new really came onto radar, and I only made small progress in what I was working on.

Finished this week

The Only Road by Alexandra Diaz

I finally finished this one up. It was action packed. I was previewing it as a potential read for a book club selection for my 7th and 8th graders for next school year in October. I think I will actually use it. I wish the cover were a little more eye-catching, because I think it will make it a slightly harder sell, but the story is good and full of action. I think they'll enjoy it as we discuss immigration as part of the book club topic for Hispanic Heritage Month.

Progress Made

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

This is actually a re-read for me, and I don't do that often. I read it years and years ago, before dystopia was the hip new word in publishing. I'm re-reading it now because the Hulu series is coming (or already by this point) out. I've also selected it as the staff selection for the September book club. Our topic is conformity and I've selected three books that were recently made into movies or series. Next I need to re-read Thirteen Reasons Why. As for Handmaid's Tale, the re-read is slow-going. And I'm pretty certain that while I'll allow anyone to choose any of the books for the month, this one is pretty solidly a staff read. I don't think our 7th graders could handle most of the vocabulary in it.

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

I've only made minimal progress on this one this week. Weather was nice, so I read outside on the porch for a while, but it's still not entirely compelling, so I'm taking it slowly.

Picking up from the library today

A Full Life: Reflections at 90 by Jimmy Carter

Some time during my drive to or from Austin last week, I started thinking about presidential libraries and recent presidents and which ones I might want to know more about. At that point, I realized I knew little about Jimmy Carter, so I put this biography on hold. Reviews aren't too stellar about it, but hopefully it'll be a good intro to the man and give me some insights.
